Rekordbox 7 — your first mix, step by step

From loading a track to giving a clean transition, in order.

Updated August 2026

Rekordbox is the software you use to organise and play your music. Your first mix needs three things: getting tracks into a library, checking the beat grid is right, and bringing two tracks together. In that order.

Step 1 — get your music into the library

Open Rekordbox and import your music folder. Let it analyse every track — that is what works out the BPM and builds the beat grid.

Step 2 — check the beat grid

After analysis, check the grid actually lines up with the beat. If it is off you can fix it by hand. Skip this and your tracks will drift apart while you are mixing.

Step 3 — set a cue point

Put a cue point where the track really starts. After that you can drop in from the same place every time.

Step 4 — bring two tracks together

Deck 1 is playing

Load the next track onto Deck 2

Listen to Deck 2 in the headphones and match the BPM

Bring it in where the phrases line up

Step 5 — the transition

Pull the bass down on the EQ and bring the new track in. Two tracks with full bass at once turns the mix to mud. That is the first thing to learn.

All of this is covered lesson by lesson in the course. The first lesson is free.

Common questions

Can I use Rekordbox for free?
The core features are free. That is enough to get started.
Do I need a laptop?
For Rekordbox, yes. A standalone machine like the XDJ-RR only needs a USB stick.
What if the beat grid is wrong?
You can correct it by hand. If the grid is wrong, beatmatching will never sit right.
